The celebrated first edition of Photographs of Mexico, a portfolio of twenty hand-pulled gravure prints by Paul Strand was printed in 1940. A second edition from the same plates was published as The Mexican Portfolio in 1967 in an edition of 1000. This print was printed in the 1980’s by Jon Goodman from Strand’s original steel faced copper plate. Comparing the three prints offers productive insight into the expressive range in photogravure made possible by variables other than the plate iteself – ink, paper choice and varnish to name a few.
