HathiTrust Digital Library is a digital preservation repository and highly functional access platform providing access to historical sources and has been an invaluable resource to the development of the information on this site.

David A. Hanson Collection of the History of Photomechanical Reproduction This collection documents the history of photomechanical printing from its development in 1826 through the perfection of three-color printing at the beginning of the twentieth century. All major intaglio, planotype, and relief printing methods are represented. The collection includes examples of virtually all categories of photographically-illustrated books, reports, accounts, treatises, catalogues, pamphlets, and ephemera. Pioneering firms and individual innovators are represented in equal number.

Gallica Access to the Bibliothéque nationale de France’s Digital Library. Gallica is one of the major digital libraries available for free via the Internet. It provides access to any type of document: printed documents (books, press and magazines) in image and text mode, manuscripts, sound and iconographic documents, maps and plans.

Camera Work Online A fully searchable online version of Camera Work made available through the University of Zurich.

Project Gutenberg offers over 54,000 free eBooks: Choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online. You will find the world’s great literature here, especially older works for which copyright has expired. We digitized and diligently proofread them with the help of thousands of volunteers.

The North American Indian Edward Sheriff Curtis published The North American Indian between 1907 and 1930 with the intent to record traditional Indian cultures. The work comprises twenty volumes of narrative text and photogravure images. Each volume is accompanied by a portfolio of large photogravure plates. The entire work is presented here, supported largely by funds from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.

Photography Scotland is an association between Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow, Stills, Edinburgh, The National Galleries of Scotland, The University of St Andrews and The University of Glasgow.  We aim to enable awareness of and engagement with Scotland’s photography, both nationally and internationally, and to promote collaboration amongst member bodies. The Season is the first public outcome of this.

French Society of Photography  (SFP)  Association founded in 1854 by a group of amateurs, scientists and artists, recognized of public utility in 1892, the French Society of photography  (SFP) is depository of one of the most important private patrimonial collections devoted to the photograph. The association is now a research and resource center dedicated to the photographic image and its history.

The Atlas of Analytical Signatures of Photographic Processes at the Getty is intended for practicing photograph conservators, curators, art historians, archivists, library professionals, and anyone responsible for the care of photograph collections. Its purpose is to aid in the formulation of analytical questions related to a particular photograph and to assist scientists unfamiliar with analysis of photographs when interpreting analytical data. The Atlas contains interpretation guides with identification of overlaps of spectral peaks and warnings of potential misidentification or misinterpretation of analytical results.

The Printed Picture exhibition October 17, 2008–July 13, 2009, was co-curated by Peter Galassi, Chief Curator of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, and Richard Benson. This site was created utilizing the content both from the book, The Printed Picture, authored by Richard Benson, and videos drawn from Richard Benson’s private lectures conducted over two days in the galleries at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in May and June, 2009.

Royal Photographic Society Journal The Royal Photographic Society Journal is the oldest continuously published photographic periodical in the world. The RPS Journal has covered the artistic and technical developments within photography, it has recorded many of the key personalities and events and, of course, it has reported on Society activities.  This digital archive of some 30,000 pages provides searchable access to all issues from the first in March 1853 up to 2015. Future years will be added as they are completed.

Maison Nicéphore Niépce  A National Heritage Site about the Niépce family preserved by the Photography School Spéos, labelled “Maisons des illustres” by the French Ministry of Culture.  Excellent information on both Niépce’s contributions to photography as well as the history of the evolution of photomechanical print in France.

Graphics Atlas is a sophisticated resource that presents a unique, object-based approach for the identification and characterization of prints and photographs.

Dr. Gordon James Brown offers insights into some of the more subtle principles underpinning physical prints. The commentary is based on thirty-eight years of teaching and the prints and other collectables that he focuses on are those which he has acquired over the years.

MET Essays Excellent collection of scholarly essays related to pictorialism and photography from the MET’s Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History.

Pictorialist Catalogs 103 catalogs of Pictorialist photography exhibitions held between 1891 and 1914.  These catalogs were donated to The Metropolitan Museum of Art by Alfred Stieglitz and are housed in the collections of the Joyce F. Menschel Photography Library, Department of Photographs.

National Galleries of Scotland 19th Century photography from the National Galleries Scotland.  The best digital archive of Hill and Adamson material.

Bibliothéque nationale de France The on-line catalog of the Bibliothéque nationale de France, repository of some of the most rare examples of early photomechanical printing in France.

George Eastman Museum Collection Search the photography collection at the George Eastman Museum, among the oldest and best in the world, comprises more than 400,000 photographic objects dating from the introduction of the medium in 1839 through to the present day.

The Daguerreian Society brings together a community of people from all over the world, who are united by a common interest in and passion for early photography of all types.

The Association of International Photography Art Dealers

Talbot Catalogue Raisonné The Catalogue seeks to put the entire corpus of the more than 25,000 known surviving Talbot negatives and prints online. This scholarly resource is in beta release to encourage your contribution to this international effort. Revisions and new entries are being added continually.

Réunion des Musées Nationaux Since 1946, the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais photo agency (a public industrial and commercial institution under the authority of the French Ministry of Culture) has been officially responsible for promoting collections of France’s national museums. For more than 60 years, the agency has carried out photography campaigns inside national museums. Each year, they capture more than 20,000 new on-site shots to further expand the agency’s collection, which is universally available at www.photo.rmn.fr.

European Printing Museums An interactive map posted by the Association of European Printing Museums (AEPM). It is searchable and provides the names and contact details for museums of printing and academic institution with printing programs as well as cultural heritage organizations of interest to the graphic arts community. The Alfred Stieglitz Collection and the Art Institute of Chicago Detailed information on the 244 photographs in the Alfred Stieglitz Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to more general information about the artists, processes, and themes relevant to the collection, the site features individual artwork pages that include resources useful to readers interested in closer study of the works.

Hildegard Homburger is a paper conservator located in Berlin who offers dedicated workshops for individuals and groups in the identification of a wide range of photomechanical printing processes. The two day course provides an opportunity to look at a great number and variety of original prints under magnification and to develop skills in the identification of their techniques.

The Conservation Register is a source for finding professionally qualified conservators in the UK and Ireland.

The Photographic Materials Group (PMG) of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) was encourages and facilitates the exchange of ideas and information about photographic conservation.
