This print was purchased directly from the Nègre archive. Despite it being a ‘weak’ impression, Nègre chose to keep it – perhaps to use as a teaching tool or reference when compared to a stronger print. Or perhaps just because its light tonality is beautiful and creates a sublime evocative softness, a quality emerging from the unique ink-on-paper photographic syntax. A print held in the collection of the Musèe d’Orsay has the same tonality.
