Robert Demachy was a prominent French Pictorial photographer of the late 19th and early 20th century. He is best known for his intensely manipulated prints that display a distinct painterly quality. This photogravure represents Demachy’s introduction to an American audience. Demachy primarily used the gum bichromate process to achieve his heavily manipulated pictorial aesthetic. As a result, his prints required copying to reproduce in photogravure. Stieglitz considered photogravures made from the ‘original negatives’ to be the equivalent of original prints. In Demachy’s case, for the most part, photogravures from his prints were one generation away from this legitimate criteria.
