Miss Rosina Filippe “Madame Vinard” Turner, Thomas Charles  (British, 1839-1896)

The novel Trilby introduced the mesmerizing character Svengali, who would become eponym for a criminal mastermind. A powerful sensation in its time, also adapted for the stage with the best actor of its time, Herbert Beerbohm Tree in the title role. Later there were also movies. Indeed, according to a February 1896 newspaper advertisement (in the Dundee Advertiser), this publication contains seven photoengraved plates. A short-lived edition with elegant photogravure portraits. [1]
