Marie Adam-Salomon, Antoine Samuel (French, 1818-1881)

This series of portraits of nineteenth-century French cultural and political personalities exemplifies the manual translation of the photograph into ink-based illustration, in this case a lithograph. The quality of the lithography is strikingly beautiful; The publication included portraits made by the leading photographers of the time including Nadar, Meyer et Pierson, Bisson, P. Petit, Carjat, Trinquart and many others.
