Lady of Charolette Eugene, Frank (American, 1865-1936)

A skilled etcher, Eugene marked and scratched many of his negatives to achieve the expressiveness he desired. Lady of Charlotte, which shows Eugene’s characteristic handwork, was apparently one of Stieglitz’s favorite images. Photogravures of it appeared not only in Camera Work, but also in Camera Notes (April 1900) and in the portfolio American Pictorial Photography, Series II (1901), all edited by Stieglitz. The sinuous lines of the image, and the figure’s suggestive pose, clearly reflect Art Nouveau and Symbolist influences. [1]
