Janet Burnet Annan, James Craig (Scottish, 1864-1946)

This unusual print and mount combination raises significant bibliographic and material questions. The photogravure was acquired in 2025 at the 24.39 Classic Photography Fair, the tabletop fair held in conjunction with Paris Photo. It formed part of a group of approximately twelve loose photogravures identified at the time of sale as plates from Camera Work. Several of the accompanying plates corresponded to Camera Work No. 19 (1907), making it reasonable to assume that this print was originally removed from a volume of that issue.

Closer examination, however, reveals that the image is not the photogravure produced by Annan for Camera Work. Instead, it is an earlier gravure printed by Blechinger & Leykauf (Munich) for publication in the German journal Photographisches Centralblatt in 1899. The plate has been trimmed to the image area, mounted on an intermediate tissue, and subsequently affixed to a Camera Work support leaf—an arrangement inconsistent with original Camera Work production practices, in which Annan personally printed the plates and tipped them directly to the journal page.

There is no evidence that Camera Work XIX was issued with variant plates, nor that Alfred Stieglitz substituted externally printed gravures for Annan’s contributions. All documented institutional copies retain Annan’s 1907 photogravure of Janet Burnet. The presence of a Blechinger & Leykauf plate therefore indicates a post-publication substitution, most plausibly undertaken by a later owner, binder, or dealer to replace a missing original plate.
