28. Bagnoles — L’Avenue du Dante, l’Hiver Magron, Henri (French, 1845-1927)

"La Normandie monumentale et pittoresque: Édifices publics, églises, châteaux, manoirs, etc." is a late 19th-century, lavishly illustrated five-volume book series published by Lemale & Cie in Le Havre between 1893 and 1899. Directed by artist Jules Adeline and featuring contributions from regional historians, authors, and photographers like Henri Margon and Paul Robert, the collaborative work served as a comprehensive architectural survey of Normandy’s five départements. Notable for its extensive, high-quality photogravure (or heliogravure) plates by P. Dujardin, it documented churches, cathedrals, castles, manors, and civic monuments, reflecting the era’s growing interest in preserving regional heritage and serving as a vital resource for architectural history and beautiful example of fine photogravure.

The series is organized by the five departments of Normandy: Seine-Inférieure (two volumes), Calvados (two volumes), Manche (two volumes), Orne (two volumes), and Eure (one volume). While standard departmental volumes contain between twelve and twenty plates, the publisher also produced specialized extracts and smaller-format monographs for sites such as Bagnoles-de-l’Orne and the Abbaye de la Grande-Trappe, typically featuring three to four illustrations.
