The Owl Martin, Unai San  (Spanish, b.1964)

Unai San Martín (b. 1964, Basque Country) is a Spanish artist and gravure printer who is recognized as a leading contemporary practitioner of photogravure. He was born into a family with a long tradition of artisans and gunmakers; his father was an avid book collector, which drew him early toward printmaking, photography, and publishing. He began as a painter, and in 1989 moved to London where he made his first etchings and woodcuts. His work became increasingly monochromatic, leading him toward photography, and he subsequently spent time in New York attending the Pratt Institute to research photogravure techniques. He later moved to Madrid to work as a printer and plate-maker before relocating in 1998 to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he has lived since
