Untitled Geiser, Jean (Swiss, 1848-1923)

Jean Geiser (1848–1923) was a French-born photographer renowned for his work in Algeria during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operating a popular photography studio in Algiers, he gained recognition for his orientalist images, particularly staged portraits of Algerian women, musicians, and street vendors. While Geiser was best known for his portraiture and commercial photography, there is little direct evidence linking him to the photogravure process. Given the era and commercial nature of his work, he may have used the term "photogravure" loosely —like many opportunists of the time—to lend a prestigious aura to the inferior calotype process, exploiting the public’s limited understanding of photomechanical techniques.
