This appears to be a test of sorts. It has a raw and primitive look. The surface of the print is manipulated in the area corresponding to the highlights of the waterfall. This was likely an attempt to brighten the highlights. It is possible that Charles Nègre attempted the same technique in approximately 1862 [1] Not much is known about atelier Rattier and photographer E. Soulé. Any information would be welcome.
