Necrosis of Portion of Brain Annan, James Craig (Scottish, 1864-1946)

The caption of this photograph reads Extensive nerosis of left temporospenoidal lobe. Photographed at post-mortem immediately on removal. The image, printed in photogravure, is from Sir William Macewen’s Pyogenic Infective Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord. Macewen was a Scottish surgeon who was a pioneer in modern brain surgery and authority on the subject. In the preface of the book he states… all of the illustrations in this book have been specially engraved for it from the author’s sketches or specimens.

A skilled photographer would have to have been involved in making the highly crafted image. It is likely Macewen commissioned T&R Annan to make the photogravures for this volume as he used the firm to print similar quality photogravures in Atlas of Head Sections. Published the same year, he states in the preface…Messrs. Annan, of Glasgow, have faithfully produced the photogravures from the photographic plates supplied to them, which is all the more credible as the subject was at first quite unknown to them
